Windsors: A Royal Dynasty
The New Generation, 1981 – 2007
In the final episode, we see the stock and popularity of the Windsors-now the most famous family in the world-ebb and flow. More wedding bells ring as Prince Andrew marries Sarah Ferguson, and Charles and Diana quickly produce two sons, Princes William and Harry. The Queen's daughter, Princess Anne, is the first to break her marriage vows when she divorces fellow equestrian Mark Phillips. Then Prince Charles' cover is blown when it's confirmed that he's had a mistress, Camilla, for most of his marriage to Diana. Prince Andrew turned into an absentee husband, and his wife Fergie found fun, if not love, elsewhere. The crowning humiliation came in the early 1990s when Diana masterminded a tell-all biography of her miserable years as Charles' wife. Windsor Castle went up in flames in 1992. It was the nadir of what The Queen called her "Annus Horribilis." The worst was still to come. Diana's death would leave two young princes without a mother, and a country in a state of shock. The Windsors, for the first time since the abdication crisis in 1936, were under serious pressure. The new century would see the incredible recovery of public goodwill, from the Queen's Golden Jubilee in 2003, to her 80th birthday, to the happy marriage of Charles and Camilla, and the rise of the new generation, Princes William and Harry. The Windsor Dynasty which began, as an accident of war, nearly a century ago, looks set to reign for many more.
