Math Education: Preparing Students to Succeed
If we as a country are going to keep our edgeâ??and ensure that this and future generations of students have the math skills to lead the wayâ??we must build a stronger foundation in these subjects in the early grades. Thatâ??s why the President commissioned the National Mathematics Advisory Panel (NMP), and as part of his FY08 budget, proposed a series of targeted math and science-related investments under the American Competitiveness Initiative. The NMP will examine and summarize the scientific evidence related to the teaching and learning of mathematics and issue policy recommendations on how to improve mathematics achievement for all students. The Initiative aims to strengthen K-12 math and science education through a number of innovative programs, including Math Now, which will promote research-based practices in elementary and middle school math instruction and prepare students to master Algebra and more advanced math in high school; and the Advanced Placement-International Baccalaureate Program, which will train 70,000 teachers to lead advanced math, science and language courses over the next five years. The program will highlight how these initiatives are strengthening math education across the country, including a discussion about the National Math Panelâ??s final report and how the Panelâ??s findings will lead to more effective math instruction in classrooms nationwide
