The Way We See It: What Makes a School Worth Going
What makes a school worth going to? Four youth media teams set out to answer this important question. Working in collaboration with producers from Learning Matters, a documentary production company that focuses on youth and learning, the youth production teams created short personal documentaries that present authentic youth perspectives about their schools. Thomas, in Espanola, NM, does poorly in academic subjects until, in a school arts program, he discovers previously unrecognized skills and gains the confidence to tackle more academic subjects. In Evanston, IL, students discover that excellent teaching requires a mixture of inspiring pedagogy, emotional coaching and a strong dose of personalized attention. Students in San Antonio highlight a magnet school with only 450 students, teachers and administrators. Finally, Peprich Center for Arts Education emerges as a beacon of progress, peace and purpose as it provides academic and personal security for students in Minnesota. These pieces depict an academic and creative road trip throughout the American public school system showing signs of hope and success. Students ultimately turn the camera on themselves and provide a blueprint for improving educational experiences for their peers.
