9/11 Looking Back...Moving Forward
Since 9-11, Americans have heard conflicting messages that "the world is forever changed," yet "we must return to our normal routines and activities." Through the eyes of high school teens near Ground Zero and others living outside of New York, this program explores how the tragedy and ongoing events have impacted the way teens now view the world and their future. We see who and what has helped them (school, parents, friends), and what they are doing to help each other. They also discuss issues such as stereotyping, cultural understanding, the media, and civil liberties. We meet a Muslim girl who copes with the emotional impact of prejudice and misunderstanding through writing. The teens also relate the positive changes such as, feeling closer to family and friends; gaining more perspective on what's important in life; realizing the need for tolerance; and having a new interest in world affairs. As one teen explains: in the past they had sympathy for teens in other countries that live with the daily threat of violence; now, they have empathy. Awards: 2002 CINE Golden Eagle; YALSA 2002 Notables List.
