Nclb Anniv. Special: Rebuild. Educ. in New Orleans
More than a philosophy, No Child Left Behind has a plan for helping all of Americaâ??s children achieve to high standards, built around several bedrock principles: local control and flexibility; assessment and accountability; options for parents; and high-quality teaching. In the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the people of the Gulf Coast have had to not only rebuild their towns, counties, and neighborhoodsâ??theyâ??ve had to rebuild their schools, many of them from the ground up. The Recovery School District in New Orleans is one such example, demonstrating the hard work and resilience of caring, local citizens, andâ??according to recent reportsâ??the kinds of educational successes that can be achieved through a reform and reconstruction plan grounded in accountability for results, parent empowerment and the belief that all children can learn and succeed. Special news stories on the ground in New Orleans will highlight the Department and Administrationâ??s ongoing commitment to the city and region, and leaders from the school system and community will discuss how a commitment to implementing the core tenets of NCLB can transform school systems and lead to student success.
