Laura is an awkward, plain woman in her late thirties who earns her living by translation work and lives alone in a flat. She would like to have a man in her life, but is furiously embarrassed by the well? meaning attempts of her glamorous younger sister, Helen, to introduce her to suitable bachelors. Helen and her husband Phil invite Laura to a party at their home, to which they have also invited an ordinary, shy man called Mike, a bachelor who knows that he is not attractive to women and has no conversation. As soon as Mike arrives at the party he is dragged across by the hosts to meet Laura. Eventually Laura and Mike encounter one another in the same bedroom where both have gone to hide.. Laura suggests that if they leave the party together, Phil and Helen will be pleased with the success of their matchmaking; and will not try to stop them.
