Primo
This one-man play recounts the Holocaust experiences of Primo Levi, the Italian chemist who found his young life shattered and utterly transformed by his internment at the Auschwitz camp in the final year of World War II. Written by and starring renowned South African actor Sir Antony Sher in the title role, the play, adapted from Levi's classic memoir Surviving Auschwitz, made its critically acclaimed debut at London's National Theatre before transferring to Broadway. The New York Times acclaimed the "crystalline" tone and staggering buildup of horrific detail in director Richard Wilson's stage production, writing, "Grandeur may seem a strange word to describe the modesty, selflessness and accumulation of small, exact gestures that are the keynotes of Sir Antony's interpretation. But from the beginning to end of Primo, grandeur is what fills the stage."
