Coal Camp Kids
Southern Colorado Coal. We've heard about the Ludlow Massacre, but what about the families and children who lived and worked in the coal camps of Las Animas and Huerfano counties? Slavs, Chechs, Italians, Mexicans, and Poles called company towns like Berwind, Cameron, Walsen, Tabasco, and Tercio home. The coal miners were craftsmen, poor, but raising their families in towns rich in the diversity and values that money can't buy.
