Austin Green Remodel Project, Part 7/Mowing and Edging
In the first half of The "This Old House Hour", using locally abundant natural materials is considered "green," so the This Old House team is using local limestone on the front porch wall caps, the first floor vanity top, and in the landscape borders. Builder Bill Moore takes host Kevin O'Connor to a local home center to show him several products that are not only green, but also widely available. Countertop contractor Chris Farris arrives to install the new recycled glass and concrete countertops in the kitchen, and Kevin travels to Brooklyn, New York to see how they are manufactured. In the second half of the Hour, landscape contractor Roger Cook shows two young homeowners how to mow and edge their front lawn properly. Then Roger, along with Kevin, plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey, and general contractor Tom Silva, ask "What is it?" in the Ask This Old House loft. Afterward, Richard shows Kevin how to repair and maintain electric water heaters. While on a House call, Tom helps a homeowner repair a broken stair tread using a new type of wooden dowel.
