Globe Trekker
Beirut and Cyprus
Filmed in June 2006, just two weeks before the latest outbreak of conflict in the Middle East, Megan McCormick visits the Lebanese capital, a city that has a long history of political and social unrest, but she also finds an atmosphere of optimism. To find out about Beirut's future, Megan meets up with a group of young rap artists, eager to live in peace and move forward from the country's political troubles. Megan takes a day trip to the fishing village of Byblos and heads to the hills to unearth fossils. Her return to Beirut takes her through Jeita Grotto, a beautiful series of underground caves and lakes. Then, we look back at a previous visit to Lebanon, shortly after its civil war, to see how it has changed – and remained the same – over the past decade.
