Retirement & Insurance
One simple way to make a significant gift in the future is to name a charitable beneficiary like Rocky Mountain PBS to receive all, or a portion of, the proceeds of a life insurance policy which is no longer needed for its original purpose. Another way to make a gift of insurance is to purchase a new policy, naming a favorite organization as beneficiary or co-beneficiary. You can thus ensure a gift "on the installment plan" which may be much larger than its cost.
Stephanie's career in the "dot.com" industry was very profitable while it lasted. She took advantage of all the stock options available to her, and delighted in her growing holdings. When business conditions dictated her very early retirement, she found she had a healthy nest egg and decided to spend some time on her other interests, including financial planning and gardening. Although she is still young, Stephanie has decided she may never need her I.R.A., and has designated its proceeds to go to Rocky Mountain PBS. That way, she's supporting an institution she believes in, and also sheltering her I.R.A. earnings from estate taxes.
