Grand Junction: Chasing the Moon Week Activities and Events

June 14
9:00 pm: Grand Mesa Observatory and Western Colorado Astronomy Club Moon Viewing (starts at dusk with weather permitting) 
Observe the moon through the telescopes of the Western Colorado Astronomy Club at Grand Mesa Observatory. Views of the moon are always spectacular and endlessly fascinating, with craters, mountains, plains, rills, and the terminator (the division between the illuminated and dark hemispheres of the moon) visible. You can also tour the observatory during this event. This event is "weather permitting". Please check the website grandmesaobservatory.com on the afternoon of the event to see if it is still on. The rain/cloud date is June 15.

June 15
9:00 am to 4:00 pm: Mesa County Libraries - Canyon Country Discovery Center planetarium at Central Library.
(viewings every 30 minutes) All Ages. Open house. 
How many constellations are in our night sky? What kind of celestial objects are out in space? Why do the stars appear to move across the sky? Discover the answers to these questions and more while taking a tour of the night sky inside an inflatable planetarium with stunning visuals.

June 18
4:00 pm: Mesa County Libraries - Spaced Out Teen Trivia at Fruita Branch Library. 
Trivia all about galactic pop-culture like Star Wars, Star Trek, Firefly, and more. See how trivial your knowledge really is! Prizes and bragging rights at stake.
6:30 pm: Archeoastronomy talk at Central Library. All ages. Local archaeologist Holly Shelton will present on ancient astronomy documented by native cultures from the area. 

June 19
2:00 pm: Mesa County Libraries - Mars Activities with Buzz Aldrin’s Foundation Mars Map at Kids Club at Central Library. Ages 6-11. 
2:00 pm: Mars Activities with Buzz Aldrin’s Foundation Mars Map at Kids Club at Fruita Library. Ages 6-11. 
2:30 pm: Moon Activities at Kids Club at Clifton Branch Library. Ages 6-11. 
6:30 pm Space Spanish Story Time at Central Library. Families.

 

June 20

8:30 pm to 10:30 pm: Colorado National Monument – Explore the Night Sky at Saddlehorn Picnic Area. If there is any weather, we will move to the Saddlehorn Visitor Center.

July 15 -19: Eureka! Science Museum’s Space Camp!  8:30 am to 5:30 pm, for ages PreK to 12th grade.
