Our second film of the season asks, "Can you own a sound?" It depends whom you ask. For more than thirty years, innovative hip-hop performers from Public Enemy to De La Soul have been re-using portions of previously recorded music in new and otherwise original compositions. But when record company lawyers got involved everything changed. What was once referred to as "borrowed melody" became a "copyright infringement." Trace the rise of hip-hop from the urban streets of New York to its current status as a multibillion-dollar industry.
Featuring the following guest panelists:
- Stan Soocher- entertainment lawyer
- Scott Kinnamon- Local collage artist who works with video and music sampling as an art
- Ietef Vita- Local DJ and active member of the hip-hop community
NOTE: This month, our reception will be held AFTER the screening.
Sponsored by CU-Denver School of Arts and Media and the Denver Film Society
