Frontier Pathways
Frontier Pathways takes the traveler on a 103-mile journey from
Pueblo, west across the Arkansas River Valley, south through the
Wet Mountains, to the edge of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The
land holds the history and contributions of Native Americans, Hispanic
settlers, homesteaders and European immigrants. They were drawn
by the beauty and promise of the land, the hope of a better life,
the "American Dream." But they had to contend with the
harsh reality of a difficult climate, a rugged landscape and the
dangers of the frontier. Frontier Pathways celebrates their courage,
stamina and tenacity in following those dreams.

Peak to Peak
The Peak to Peak Scenic and Historic Byway skirts
the Continental Divide and jagged terrain of the Rockies. A patchwork
of Indian trails, mining roads and early auto routes, Peak to Peak
celebrates the origins of two of Colorados defining industries
mining and tourism. Meet Jennie Golden, an ex-slave who became
Black Hawks midwife; Chin Lin Sou, an immigrant who grew rich
and became the leader of the Chinese community in Colorado; David
Moffat, who conceived the highest rail line in North America; and
F.O. Stanley and Enos Mills, who led the effort to create Rocky
Mountain National Park. |

San Juan Skyway
The San Juan Skyway Scenic and History Byway
traces the marvelous threads that weave together the sagas of our
history, cultural and natural wonders, of Otto Mears who blasted
a "million dollar highway" into Uncompahgre Gorge to reach
the gold fields; of murder and betrayal between mine owners and
mine workers in the gold towns; of the Utes struggle to retain
their homelands in the face of white encroachment; and of Virginia
McClurg who fought to preserve ancient cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde. |

Santa Fe Trail
In Colorado the 187-mile-long Santa Fe Trail
Scenic and Historic Byway parallels the historic 19th century Santa
Fe Trail. Starting at the Kansas border, the byway continues southwest
and climbs Raton Pass to the New Mexico border. To journey the Santa
Fe Trail is to travel the vastness of time, from the age of the
dinosaurs to the bustling frontier days at Bents Fort to the
20th century Dust Bowl and the injustices of a Japanese-American
internment camp at Amache. Memories of the past remain strong, but
the regeneration of the prairie in Comanche National Grasslands
gives hope for the future. |
