An analysis of the sands shows that they contain about ten percent magnetic iron and a fine, flour gold. Although conservative mining engineers say that this gold is too fine for recovery, there have been repeated efforts to perfect methods for its recovery and many mining claims have been filed. This was one of the reasons that a National Monument was created of the Grand Sand Dunes - it being feared that the efforts to commercialize the dunes would result in the exclusion of the public from this beautiful, scenic and outstanding recreational region to which the San Luis Valley invites the tourists and visitors to see and enjoy.
