AUGUST 12, 1938 A new method for getting gold from dunes sand has been developed by George Opincar of Blanca, who for eleven years has been experimenting on the extraction of the metal known to exist in fabulous quantities in the Great Sand Dunes national monument.
Opincars method is an application of the amalgamation process, developed though a machine of his own invention.
Using his machine recently, Opincar recovered 21 cents worth of gold from two and one-half tons of sand which assayed about 17 cents per ton. Some of the sand dunes contain gold to the value of about 56 cents per ton, it has been determined, and Opincar declares his process is inexpensive enough to permit profitable treatment of the sand.
Further work on the method is expected to make it possible to bring big returns.
