America’s Byways

Using America’s Byways

Teachers are encouraged to preview the programs before viewing with students. Introduce one segment at a time while integrating the suggested activities. For each segment of the five programs, this Website provides the following resources to help teachers integrate the series into their History and/or Geography curriculums:
Standards-Based Themes
Standards-related themes in geography, history and economics are listed for each video segment. These themes are listed and explained in the chart.
Summary
Brief summaries of each program and video segment are included.
Vocabulary
The words selected for the vocabulary lists are closely related to the content of each video segment. Since the narrators use a rich, descriptive vocabulary, teachers may want to supplement the vocabulary list with other words used in the videos.
Pre-Viewing Focus
Before showing the video segments, use these questions to focus students’ attention on important content and significant details.
Post-Viewing Discussion
These questions are designed to encourage students to think more deeply about the video content by making connections, comparisons, inferences, and relating what they view to their own experience.
Wayside Excursions
These in-depth articles further explain, expand upon and/or enhance the content presented in the video segments.

Santa Fe Trail, Peak to Peak and Frontier Pathways include additional sections for older students:
Exploring on Your Own
Teachers may use these topics to expand students’ knowledge about Colorado history and geography, or use as research topics for individuals or groups of students.

Further Down the Road: Questions for the Middle School Student
Teachers may use these topics to expand students’ knowledge about Colorado history and geography, or use as research topics for individuals or groups of students.

Lesson Plans
San Juan Skyway and Los Caminos Antiguos contain two complete lesson plans designed for students in Grades 4-6.
