A Dangerous Presence
If you spend much time in the backcountry sking, snowboarding or snowmobiling, you've thought about avalanches. In fact, even if you aren't drawn to cold weather outdoor adventures, you still may think about them.
Since 1950, avalanches have killed more people in Colorado than any other natural hazard, and in the United States, Colorado accounts for one-third of all avalanche deaths, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.
What causes avalanches? How can they be avoided?
We aired "Switchback: Trigger Your Senses" on Jan. 31 -- and now is your chance to watch it again.
The film's producers traveled across Colorado from the CAIC headquarters in Boulder to the San Juan Mountains in search of avalanches -- and the mountain professionals who deal with them. They interviewed everyone from ski patrollers, mountain guides, CAIC forecasters, and CDOT avalanche control crews to USFS snow rangers and U.S. Special Forces Mountain Warfare instructors.
We'd love to know what you think about the film -- post your comments below!
