The Rio Grande Southern Galloping Geese, originally constructed in the 1930's, were promoted as an economical means of transporting freight, mail, and passengers. Driven by one man, the first true Galloping Goose, also known as Motor No.2, in its initial creation was an unusual combination of Pierce-Arrow automobile parts.

During the depression the railway was in bankruptcy, and these motorcars kept the railway running for the next twenty years.
